TIDEWATER CHAPTER
MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 20, 2008 MEETING
GOLDEN PALACE RESTAURANT, HAMPTON, VA
Twenty three (23) members and eight (8) guests in attendance.
The meeting was called to order by Chapter Chairman Joel Johnson CPP at 11:35 a.m.. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, attendees were asked to stand and introduced themselves and the companies or organizations they represented. Chairman Johnson introduced INFRAGARD rep Jack La Grande who spoke about that organization’s concept and purpose. FBI Special Agent Ken Welch then spoke briefly about the procedures for joining INFRAGARD, and what the membership entails. Chairman Johnson took a moment to recognized the Society’s newest members, and presented them with ASIS water bottles. He also addressed a few administrative notes including changes in the guest speakers for the next couple of meetings, and latest good news about how the chapter membership has grown to record numbers despite the anticipated loss of some whom had not renewed their membership for 2008. He then called for “professional notes” which any of the members wanted to share with the attendees.
As lunch was being served, Chairman Johnson called on Jack LaGrande to introduce this month’s speaker, Special Agent Steve Sciavolino of the FBI’s Norfolk Division Cyber Crimes Unit who spoke on the topic of Cyber Crimes & Computer Intrusion. For the next twenty five minutes, Agent Sciavolino discussed the new risks and trends which are primarily the result of the globalization of infrastructure due to the growth of the Internet. He went on to explain how cyber counterintelligence threats can be computer based, personnel based or even facility based, and he then outlined the cyber intrusion sequence which includes reconnaissance, exploitation, search, collection, and egress. Switching to how to counter cyber threats, Agent Sciavolino addressed such software as malware, spyware , and botnets. he then discussed steps one should take when shopping online such as shopping from reputable sites, protecting your credit card information, and keeping a list of all credit cards and account information. As thr cyber threat gets more and more sophisticated, Agent Sciavolino suggested that the solution must be consist of a multi-lateral response, advanced technology, coupled with increased public awareness, and law enforcement tracking & tracing.. Finally he addressed the issue of home computers, and the dangers with regard to children on the internet, and security of wireless networks.
After his talk, Agent Sciavolino entertained questions from the members. Chairman Johnson thanked him for coming, presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation.
Having no further business, the meeting adjourned at 12:51 p.m..
