TIDEWATER CHAPTER
MINUTES OF THE MARCH 19, 2008 MEETING
GOLDEN PALACE RESTAURANT, HAMPTON, VA
Twenty six members (26) members and three (3) guests in attendance.
The meeting was called to order by Chapter Chairman Joel Johnson CPP at 11:32 a.m.. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, everyone was asked to stand and introduced themselves and their guests. Chapter Chairman Joel Johnson recognized those new Society members and presented them with their Certificates of Membership. He also recognized newly certified member Donald Green, and congratulated him on his success in attaining the coveted CPP. Chairman Johnson then reviewed upcoming Chapter meetings. Reports were heard from the Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice Chairperson who also heads the chapter scholarship program. Chairman Johnson then invited everyone to partake of the buffet.
After lunch, Chairman Johnson introduced our guest speaker Former Chapter Chairman Ray Ferrara, CPP. Mr. Ferrara who is the Head of Corporate Security and Risk Management for the Ferguson Corporation spoke on the subject of Business Continuity Management. Beginning with a basic outline of the Business Continuity Management or BCM concept, Mr. Ferrara defined BCM planning as planning to ensure the continuation of operations in the event of a catastrophic event and minimize the effects of an outage or disruptive event. He went on to explain how to create a Business Continuity Management team with key players of the organization, and how that team should establish the guidelines, identify the resources, and set the standards which guide the business continuity planning process.
Mr. Ferrara went on to discuss “business impact analysis” and the relationships of its four main factors: threat, vulnerability plus impact equals risk. He explained the importance of vital records, and of establishing a succession plan to ensure the continuity of corporate operations in the event of catastrophic loss of all or part of the organization’s vital records. The importance of emergency notification systems for regional or national organizations was carefully laid out in order to stress the importance of timely notification of key personnel should some disruptive event occur. Finally, Mr. Ferrara outlined the resources for small business organizations.
After answering questions from the members, Mr. Ferrara passed out handouts, and was given a round of applause from the members for his outstanding presentation. Chairman Johnson then presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation. Chairman Johnson reminded everyone to be sure to make their reservations for next month’s meeting.
Having no further business, the meeting adjourned at 12:52 p.m..
