TIDEWATER CHAPTER
MINUTES OF THE JUNE 18, 2008 MEETING
GOLDEN PALACE RESTAURANT, HAMPTON, VA
Twenty five members (25) members and four (4) guests in attendance.
   The meeting was called to order by Chapter Chairman Joel Johnson CPP at 11:45 a.m.. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, everyone was asked to stand and introduced themselves and their guests. Chapter Chairman Joel Johnson then outlined the programs for the July and August meetings and presented a short “power point” presentation about our annual September planning meeting where we typically outline all the activities for the upcoming year. At this meeting we also try to identify potential members for the coming year’s chapter leadership and  executive board positions. Chairman Johnson also described the duties required of persons serving in the various positions.  
   After this presentation, He explained that the Chapter had been given two free registrations for this year’s ASIS Seminal & Exhibits to be held in Atlanta Georgia in September, and how we would hold a raffle today and at next month’s meeting to give them to two members who would be available to attend. Vice Chairperson Kathy Wojciechowski distributed raffle tickets for eligible members to fill out for the drawing to be held at the end of today’s meeting. Chairman Johnson then recognized new members and presented Certificates of Membership, and congratulated member Col. Keith Blowe, U.S.A., CPP for his excellent CPP training program at Fort Monroe which resulted in the certification of five new CPP’s this year.
     Before moving to the buffet for lunch Chairman Johnson called any “hot topics form the members. Col. Blowe CPP relayed his latest information on the “new face of terrorism” which describes the “new” terrorist will someone who face looks very non-middle eastern and more American. Secretary Wendell Parker, CPP relayed the recent news of the TSA uniform change to royal blue shirts with metal badges to look more official.
. After lunch, Chairman Johnson introduced the speaker Special Agent William “Chip” Banks of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives (ATF). For the next 45 minutes Agent Banks discussed suspect interview techniques. With the aid of a “power point “ presentation, he explained the importance of complete preparation by obtaining as much factual information as possible. Punctuating his talk with r eal life stories, Agent Banks went on to explain the significance of having a small, private, sound insulated interrogation room which was completely void of distractions. He further explained how important it was to limit the number of interrogators so that a rapport can be established to enhance both verbal and non-verbal communication between the interrogator and the suspect. Finally, he stressed the importance of looking for body cues, avoiding harsh language, most of all listening. After answering questions from the members, Agent Banks was given a round of applause from the members for his outstanding presentation. Chairman Johnson then presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation. Chairman Johnson reminded everyone to be sure to make their reservations for next month’s meeting.
     The drawing for the free registration was won by Terry Paine of Busch Gardens, and         having no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:32 p.m..
