TIDEWATER CHAPTER
MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 20, 2008 MEETING
GOLDEN PALACE RESTAURANT, HAMPTON, VA
Twenty seven members (27) members and two (2) guests in attendance.
The meeting was called to order by Chapter Chairman Joel Johnson CPP at 11:42 a.m.. After the Pledge of Allegiance, everyone was asked to introduce themselves and the company or organization they represented. Chairman Johnson then recognized new members and newly certified members, and handed out gifts that he had received from a visit to ASIS headquarters in Alexandria. .He informed us that Keith Goines, who for many years worked at Headquarters as chapter service rep had left the Society to pursue employment opportunities elsewhere. Chairman Johnson then reminded everyone about our September chapter planning meeting where we will outline our activities for next year, and identify members to fill our chapter offices and committee positions. This meeting will be held on the SECOND Wednesday in September (9/10/08) instead of our usual third Wednesday. This change is because of a conflict with the ASIS national Seminar & Exhibits in Atlanta Georgia during the third week in September. Chairman Johnson called for “lessons learned” from the members. Several members reported that they routinely read the daily security management e-mail which is sent out by Headquarters. One member also reported that TSA also posts a daily newsletter which is very informative.
After the members had eaten their lunch, the guest speaker Rosalind Roland of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service was introduced and for the next 55 minutes she discussed mission, history, and current role of the Postal Inspection Service in helping to deter the threat of terrorism in the United States today. Ms. Roland explained how she went from being a regular U.S. Post office letter carrier to a Postal Inspector, and she described her early experiences helping to track down and apprehend people who were dealing in child pornography through the mails. She discussed the agency’s role investigating and apprehending those responsible for sending anthrax poison through the mail. Inspector Roland explained how in addition to apprehending perpetrators who illegally transmit contraband (such as drugs or pornography) through the mails, another mission of the Postal Inspection Service is to investigate thefts that occur within the post office by employees, and the counterfeiting of post office products such as stamps, money orders of government checks. Inspector Roland showed examples of some of the counterfeited items, and the quality of craftsmanship appeared very high. The advent of high tech computers and color printers, she explained, is the main reason why the federal government continues to develop paper and printing techniques that are increasingly difficult , if not impossible, to reproduce.
After answering additional questions from the members, Inspector Roland was given a round of applause from the members for her outstanding presentation, and Chairman Johnson presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation and a small gift from the Chapter. He then reminded everyone again of the change of meeting date for September.
Having no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:20 p.m..
