After lunch, Chairman Johnson introduced our guest speaker Ms. Sabrina Jones,
Regional Manager of the “Partners on Youth Violence” for Gloucester, Hampton, James City County, Newport News, York County, and Williamsburg. For the next 30 minutes Ms. Jones gave an informative Power Point presentation which began with the mission of her organization “to coordinate the efforts of local authorities to reduce youth violence in the member jurisdictions. After showing some of the youth crime statistics for 2004 through 2006 to help our understanding of the situation, she pointed out the significance of the “School Discipline, Crime, & Violence Report” and it’s nine offense categories. She went on to explain how the goal of preventing violence was achieved through promoting mental and emotional health in juveniles, and building relationships between school officials (such as guidance counselors and school resource officers) and students. She discussed what is constant and what doesn’t work in trying to solve the youth violence problem, and she explained how guards and cameras can only do so much in solving this problem, and how the focus for the future should be on prevention, early interdiction, and formulating partnerships. Finally, she discussed the importance of technology and the media in helping to reduce crime, and offered some strategies for individuals to help prevent young people from becoming involved in gangs. These strategies include participation in mentoring programs, and working with other parents on gang prevention programs.
After answering questions from the members, Ms. Jones was given a round of applause from the members for her outstanding presentation, and Chairman Johnson presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation. Chairman Johnson reminded everyone to be sure to make their reservations for next month’s meeting.
